Qirim ist das neue Projekt des Gitarristen und Ethnomusikologen Raphael Roginski – eine meditative Reise in die Klangwelt und Spiritualität der Krimtataren. Basierend auf jahrelanger Recherche und persönlichen Reisen nach Ukraine verwandelt Roginski historische Lieder und archivalische Quellen in eine lebendige, zeitgenössische Klanglandschaft.

Die Musik ist kein Folklore-Reenactment, sondern ein atmender Organismus: Mystik, Sufismus, Trauerlieder und die Weite der Steppe verschmelzen mit improvisatorischen Strukturen. Qirim erzählt von Verlust, Widerstandskraft und Hoffnung – und öffnet einen Zugang zur kaum bekannten Kultur der Krimtataren.

Raphael Rogiński ist Gitarrist, Komponist, Improvisator und Forscher musikalischer Folklore, dessen Arbeit Jazz- und Klassikausbildung mit musikologischen und ethnomusikologischen Studien verbindet. Aus vielfältigen türkischen, kurdischen, georgischen, persischen, armenischen und weiteren musikalischen Traditionen entwickelt er eigenständige Klangsysteme jenseits gängiger Konventionen. Er ist bekannt für Projekte wie Drom, Bach Bleach, Plays Henry Purcellsowie die jüdisch inspirierten Ensembles Cukunft und Shofar, ebenso wie für Wovoka, Shy Albatross, Hizbut Jamm, Żywizna und Elik. Rogińskis Musik umfasst Film, Performance, Theater und interdisziplinäre Formate; er arbeitete mit zahlreichen internationalen Künstler*innen zusammen und trat bei Festivals wie Le Guess Who, Unsound, Rewire und BRDCST sowie im Lincoln Center, Barbican Center und Bozar auf. Sein viel beachtetes Album Raphael Rogiński plays John Coltrane and Langston Hughes: African Mystic Music erschien in den Top 20 von The Wire, und mit Talán, Žaltyssowie dem 2025 entstandenen Projekt Ružičniak Tajni setzt er seine Erkundung osteuropäischer und globaler musikalischer Traditionen fort.

“Qirim” is the new musical project by Raphael Roginski – a journey into sound, memory, and spirituality. It is a meditative treatise on the culture of the Crimean Tatars and, more broadly, on the entire lost world of Crimea. Roginski, a guitarist and ethnomusicologist, combines his years of research into Eastern music with a deeply personal, autobiographical thread. “Qirim” is both a musical voyage and a travel diary – a record of an inner journey in pursuit of sound, toward a world that has long served as a kind of compass for the artist. His frequent travels to Ukraine have been an endless source of inspiration – both artistic and human.

In his interpretation, the music of Crimea is not a reconstruction of folklore, but a living organism – the breath of a culture that has survived despite exile and attempts at erasure. The mysticism of Crimean Tatar tradition, the echoes of ancient Sufism, the sound of mourning songs, and the meditative pulse of the steppe intertwine with improvisation, creating a spiritual and emotional landscape. By reaching for songs rediscovered in archives, Roginski brings them to life here and now through his arrangements. “Qirim” is a story about longing and hope – a meditative narrative that allows us to approach the experience of Crimean Tatar culture.
